Jeff Harper of Hot Stuff Hearth & Home Wins Big by Getting Involved

At HPBExpo25, the Expo Explorer Challenge added an extra layer of fun and engagement to the show, blending technology, discovery, and a bit of friendly competition into a memorable perk for attendees. This interactive scavenger hunt, hosted within the official HPBExpo mobile app, encouraged users to visit specific locations throughout the show, including sponsor booths, featured areas, and unique experiences like the Outdoor Burn.

For those who completed the challenge, an incentive awaited: a chance to win three free nights at the HPBExpo26 host hotel in New Orleans.

That prize was claimed by Jeff P. Harper, co-owner of Hot Stuff Hearth & Home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and member of RMHPBA, who walked away a winner and provided enthusiastic feedback that speaks to the program’s success.

Making the Most of the Expo

Harper, a hearth industry professional, was drawn to the Expo Explorer Challenge as a chance to try something new.

“It was something fun to do,” he said. “It helped me be more involved in Expo.”

The challenge nudged Harper and others to use the HPBExpo mobile app more effectively, highlighting its utility as a planning and navigation tool.

“It was essential to use the app,” Harper explained. “Otherwise, you might just walk around and miss something you had intended to do while at Expo.”

Driving Deeper Engagement

One of the biggest strengths of the Expo Explorer Challenge was to encourage attendees to visit locations they might have otherwise skipped.

“I probably wouldn’t have gone to the Outdoor Burn if it weren’t for the scavenger hunt,” Harper admitted.

For sponsors and exhibitors, this meant increased visibility. Each challenge stop gave them a chance to engage directly with attendees—sometimes in more meaningful ways than a traditional booth walk-by.

“Some of the codes were inside the booths,” Harper noted. “So, you had to go in, which gave you the chance to stop and potentially see something new.”

Winning—and Beating the Odds

After completing the challenge, Harper was randomly selected as the winner of three free hotel nights at HPBExpo26.

“Excited. Accomplished. Surprised,” he said, describing his reaction.

A Tool for the Future

Harper sees real potential for the Expo Explorer Challenge and similar tools in future events.

“It gets you up and out of your comfort zone,” he said. “Otherwise, you might just spend the whole time visiting your favorite manufacturer and miss out on what others are doing.”

Beyond helping attendees discover more of the show, Harper also said that the mobile app challenge helped him exercise because he had to walk the showroom floor several times to look for codes.

Highlights from HPBExpo25

During HPBExpo25, Harper said that he was able to discover new products and make new connections.

“I found solutions to a few holes in my product lineup in my showroom,” he said. “I also connected with new distributors that could give outlets for sourcing things.”

Harper praised the networking and show floor energy as key highlights of his experience.

“It’s a fun atmosphere,” he said. “I enjoyed walking out with the band to open the show after the keynote address. That was a ton of fun!”

Looking Ahead to HPBExpo26

As Harper looks ahead to HPBExpo26 in New Orleans, he’s most excited about the same things that brought him to the show this year:

“Visiting with manufacturers and seeing friends,” he said. “I just really enjoy this industry.”

His advice for first-time attendees or anyone on the fence about using the app next year?

“Don’t get overwhelmed. Don’t be afraid to talk to the manufacturers,” Harper said. “And definitely try the app challenge—it makes the experience more fun and meaningful.”
