The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association released the following statement in response to the tariff dispute between Canada, China, Mexico, and the U.S.
“The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA) joins other associations in the building trades and the home appliance industries in sharing their deep concern with the trade dispute between the United States, Canada, China, and Mexico,” said President & CEO Jill McClure. “With members in the U.S. and Canada, and comprised almost entirely of small businesses, many manufacturers and retailers of hearth, barbecue and outdoor living products will be adversely impacted by these actions. Consumers, will also, no doubt, pay increased prices as a result.”
The planning, purchase, and installation of our products often take several months and negative influences on pricing and product availability may lead consumers to opt not to purchase or install these products in their homes. Additionally, the lack of inventory will adversely impact consumers given the seasonality of hearth products used for heat in cold months.
“Our industry’s products help heat homes and put food on tables,” said McClure. “These necessary products are created by mostly small businesses in our industry, many of which are family-owned and operated. They are uniquely vulnerable to what will essentially be a tax on their goods, impacting these businesses and consumers.”
Given the ongoing pressures of operating in a complex and restrictive regulatory environment, introducing economic pressures and consumer uncertainty to this industry will have far-reaching effects. Reduced production at manufacturing facilities and a decline in retail sales could result in job losses across our member categories.
HPBA and its Canadian sister organization, HPBA Canada, urge policymakers to work together to find a solution that will provide economic security for both countries. Staff will continue to closely monitor the situation and inform its members as the tariffs are implemented.
