The HPBA Government Affairs Leadership Academy (GALA) develops the next generation of industry leaders by helping participants understand how government decisions affect the hearth, patio, and barbecue industry. Through monthly sessions, executive-led discussions, and hands-on exercises, the year-long program strengthens advocacy skills and builds confidence communicating with policymakers. Two members of the current class are already taking advantage of the opportunity, bringing fresh perspectives and a commitment to future leadership.
Meet the GALA Members: Gabe Mooney & Danny Kahler
Gabe Mooney, Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Central Boiler in Greenbush, MN, brings strong enthusiasm and a desire to deepen his impact across the hearth industry. He joined the program to better understand the rulemaking process and expand his network with industry leaders.
He’s particularly interested in EPA regulations and how testing requirements and fuel policies affect manufacturers and consumers. What resonates most is GALA’s ability to connect participants facing similar challenges across the country, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and collective advocacy.
For him, GALA is more than a learning experience—it’s an opportunity to strengthen both individual leadership and the industry’s unified voice.
Danny Kahler, Manager at Smokey’s Stoves in Medford, OR, brings passion, gratitude, and a strong desire to give back to the industry that shaped his career. As a manager—and soon-to-be owner—he oversees everything from operations and sales to service coordination and marketing.
Having started in the industry in 1992, he values the relationships he’s built and credits the community for both personal and professional growth. He joined GALA to strengthen his advocacy skills, better understand the legislative process, and help represent the industry—especially as natural gas policies evolve in his home state of Oregon.
He’s especially energized by the program’s focus on collaboration and preparation, noting that understanding all sides of an issue is key to effective advocacy. For him, GALA is an opportunity to ensure the industry’s voice is heard and its future remains strong.
Applications for the 2027–2028 GALA class will open this fall. If you are interested in participating in the next GALA class, please contact governmentaffairs@hpba.org.
